Courses Offered in JNU

Most of my friends have started calling me inquiring about new admission for this academic year 2013-2014. Like my friends, you might have a question or two about JNU admissions. (smiles). I’ll help you out here. JNU is one of the best institutions in India and ranks among the best universities in the world. It has B.A, M.A, M.Sc, M.Phil, and PhD courses apart from other research programs. The details of criterion, eligibility and study materials for JNU entrance exams I’ve highlighted might help you out.

B.A (Honors)

First Year

JNU offers bachelor degree courses in foreign languages. European languages – French, German, Spanish and Asian languages like Hindi, Arabic, Chinese, Korean and others are offered by the university.
To get into B.A first year, one need not have knowledge of that particular language that he or she opts for.
Students giving the first year entrance exam have to prepare on General Knowledge, Aptitude Test, Current Affairs and English.

Second Year

A student can get directly into B.A Second year as long as s/he has a first year’s bachelor degree (of any stream of study from any university) provided s/he possesses the equivalent level in that particular language that s/he opts for. There will be viva-voce for those who qualified the written test.

M.A (Honors)

Social Sciences like Sociology, History, Geography, International Relations (IR), Political Science, French (Literature), French (Translation), English (Literature), German, Chinese (Translation), Korean (Translation),  Linguistics, Arabic and other subjects are offered in JNU.
Except for the students who would be mastering literature through a foreign language (English not counted) and translation students, there is no viva voce for courses like Sociology, History etc.

It’s a higher course study and the first step for in-depth research. Arts and Aesthetics, Philosophy etc. are some centers in JNU where only the M.Phil and PhD courses are given.
After clearing the written entrance, viva-voce is compulsory.

Direct PhD courses are provided. Any student from any university can apply for it.

Students giving exams for B.A 1st year should concentrate on G.K, Current affairs, Aptitude test and English language.
In the entrance exam of B.A 2nd year in foreign languages, questions will be set in the language s/he is appearing for. After s/he qualifies the written round, there will be a viva-voce where the professors will see your potential, your efficiency, your fluency and your knowledge.
Students giving exams for master should already posses fair amount of knowledge for the subject that they have opted for. Entrance test questions are based on the subject itself.
Students should focus on the previous years’ question papers and its pattern.

NOTE: All study materials are available at the Administration Block of the University.
